Number four is a real position and it is not nothing

A map pack showing three local results, with further businesses visible below the fold

Three results show. You are the fourth.

It is the most demoralizing position in local search, because from where you sit it looks identical to not existing. It is not identical, and the gap between those two things is worth understanding before deciding what to spend on.

What actually still reaches you

Four surfaces, roughly in order of how much they matter:

The expanded list. A searcher who is not satisfied by the first three opens the longer set of local results. Fourth is near the top of that. This is the single largest thing being written off by owners who only ever check the pack.

Your own name. Everyone who is told about you by a neighbor, a discharge planner, a body shop or a friend types your name, not your category. That search does not care where you rank for anything, and what surfaces for it is entirely within reach.

Organic, below the pack. The blue links are still there, they still get clicked, and they are won by pages rather than by proximity.

Everywhere that is not Google. Directories, review sites, Nextdoor, the referral relationships you already have. Smaller, but they are not competing for three slots.

The honest part

None of this is a substitute for a pack position. The pack is where the majority of the phone calls live, and pretending otherwise would be a comfortable lie — the case for it is straightforward.

So the fourth position is not a place to settle. It is a place with more traffic than it feels like, which buys you the time to fix the things that decide the ranking without panicking into something expensive.

What to fix first, from fourth

The order matters more than the list, because the cheap items are also the fast ones:

  1. Primary category, checked against what the three above you use
  2. Every profile field completed — services entered individually, hours right, description written
  3. Reviews: the count and the recency, not just the average
  4. Listings that agree with each other on name, address and phone
  5. Pages on your own site that are about the service and the place, rather than about the company

Nothing there is a secret. It is the same list as everyone’s, and the reason it works is that most competitors do about half of it and then stop.

The measurement trap

At fourth, the temptation is to check the pack daily and judge everything by whether the order changed today. It varies by the searcher’s location, so this produces a lot of feeling and very little information.

Watch calls and direction requests instead. Those are events with a person attached, and a week of them says more than a month of refreshing a search you already know the answer to. Which figures are worth reading is a subject of its own.

Fix the profile fundamentals first, because they are the cheapest and the fastest to correct. What that involves, plan by plan, is on the services page.

Common questions

Does a business ranked fourth in local search get any calls?

Yes, through surfaces other than the map pack itself: the expanded local results a searcher opens from the pack, the organic listings below it, direct searches for the business name, and third-party directories and review sites. The volume is lower than a pack position, which is why the pack is worth pursuing, but the position is not silent.

What is the difference between the map pack and expanded local results?

The map pack is the short set of business results shown directly in search. Expanding it opens a longer list, which is where a searcher who was not satisfied by the first three continues looking. Businesses outside the pack appear there.

Should a business outside the map pack invest in its website instead?

Both, in a specific order. Profile fundamentals are cheaper and faster to correct than site work, so they come first; site content is the longer investment that also serves searchers who never open the pack. Treating them as alternatives is the mistake.

How long does it take to move into the map pack?

Nobody can put a date on it. The inputs are known — category accuracy, proximity, review volume and recency, profile completeness, consistent listings — but the timeline depends on the market and on what competitors do, and any specific promise about it should be treated as a warning sign.

Is being fourth better than being tenth?

Materially, yes. Fourth appears near the top of the expanded results a searcher opens when the first three do not satisfy them, which is a position that receives real attention. Tenth requires the searcher to keep going well past the point most stop.
