How Siri and Alexa pick a local business

A phone on a workbench showing a voice assistant answering a spoken request for a nearby business

Siri and Alexa have no business directory to join. Each assistant answers from a short list of records it already has access to — Apple’s own place cards, Google’s profiles, and licensed content from review platforms — which means the work is keeping those records right, not finding a way into the assistant.

That is the whole mechanism, and it disappoints people who were hoping for a form.

Siri reads Apple’s place card

Apple maintains its own business record, separate from Google’s, and it is free to claim. Apple’s announcement of Business Connect described the place card as feeding Maps, Siri, Messages and Wallet — one record, several surfaces, one of which happens to speak.

This is the gap most local businesses still have open. Google gets claimed on day one; Apple gets claimed when somebody mentions it. (What Apple Business Connect is and how to claim it.)

Alexa reads a licensed feed

Amazon does not run a claimable local business registry either. Its assistant, like several others, gets local content through partnerships.

Yelp said as much in its own announcement of 10 August 2026, naming ChatGPT, Apple Maps, Amazon’s Alexa+, Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo! among the platforms delivering Yelp-powered recommendations. That is a vendor describing its own distribution, so read it as what it is — but the shape of the answer is the point. Assistants license content. They do not build directories.

Gemini and Google Assistant read the profile you already manage

The Google end is the one most owners can influence directly, because the record is the Business Profile they already have. Nothing separate needs creating. (What Google’s assistant surfaces draw on.)

Nobody sells access to any of this

There is no assistant placement to buy, no priority tier, no submission portal. The package sold as voice search optimization is the ordinary local work with a microphone drawn on the box. (The other shapes that pitch arrives in.)

The reason this is worth saying plainly: the absence of a lever is itself useful information. It means the money goes to the records, and the records are cheap.

The ten-minute check

Pick the three questions a customer would actually ask out loud. Not your business name — the need. “Who does mobile detailing near me.” “Find a home care agency in Waco.”

Ask each one on a phone, then on a smart speaker if there is one in the house. Write down what comes back. Ask again on a different day. The answers will not be identical, and that variability is the finding, not a fault in the test.

Then go and read the records underneath: the Apple card, the Google profile, the review platforms. Anything the assistant got wrong about your hours, your address or what you do is almost always wrong on one of them first. (The same discipline, applied to text assistants.)

What the check cannot tell you

Whether you can get named tomorrow. Nobody controls that, and any answer you get today is one sample of a system that resolves differently by device, account, phrasing and location.

What it can tell you is whether the raw facts are right. That part is entirely yours.

Ask the three questions out loud this week, then fix whatever the answers got wrong at the source. If you want the records themselves kept straight and re-checked rather than checked once, that is what the AI-visibility work covers.

Common questions

How do Siri and Alexa choose which local business to name?

They read from a small set of sources rather than from a directory of their own. Siri answers out of Apple Maps, where a business can claim its place card through Apple Business Connect. Alexa and several other assistants draw on licensed content feeds alongside public business data. There is no separate assistant listing to create.

Is there a Siri listing or an Alexa listing I can claim?

No. Neither company runs a business registry that you sign up for. The claimable records underneath are the ones you already know about — the Apple Business Connect place card, the Google Business Profile, and the review platforms that license their content onward.

Does voice search optimization exist as a service?

There is no separate lever to pull. Anyone selling a voice search package is selling work on the same underlying records — the profile, the name, address and phone, the categories, the hours and the reviews. Those are worth doing under their own name, at their own price.

How can I check what an assistant says about my business?

Ask it, out loud, the way a customer would, and note what comes back. Then repeat the question two or three times over a week, because answers vary. Treat the result as a reading rather than a score, and check the underlying records for anything it got wrong.
