Bing Places: the owned listing for the other search engine

Two directory listings for the same business side by side, one held directly by the owner and one published through a subscription service

Bing Places for Business is Microsoft’s free listing platform — the Bing equivalent of a Google Business Profile, controlling how a business appears in Bing search and Bing Maps. It costs nothing, it is owned rather than rented, and if you import from your Google profile it takes about fifteen minutes. Most local businesses have never claimed theirs.

Bing’s share of search is the number every agency uses to justify ignoring it. The listing takes less time than reading an argument about market share.

The address moved, and it matters for finding it

Microsoft announced on 3 October 2025 that the business owner experience was moving into the Bing.com domain: bingplaces.com became bing.com/forbusiness. Existing accounts and their listings were migrated automatically, and users signing in with old credentials get redirected.

Worth knowing because half the instructions written about Bing Places point at the old domain, and an owner who tries the old address and hits a redirect often assumes the product was discontinued. It was not; it was rebuilt.

Importing from Google instead of typing it twice

The import pulls your listing details from Google rather than making you re-enter them. Microsoft said in the same October 2025 announcement that the import flow was rebuilt to be faster and more reliable at preserving details including business name, hours and contact information.

Two cautions that follow from how an import works rather than from anything Microsoft said. An import copies the source, so anything wrong or stale on the Google profile arrives wrong and stale on Bing — fix the Google side first. And an import is a snapshot, not a sync: change your hours next spring and Bing does not learn about it because you changed them somewhere else.

Shipped, versus said

Worth separating, because these get quoted as one thing.

Shipped, per Microsoft’s own announcement: the free listing on Bing search and Bing Maps, the rebuilt Google import, bulk editing and dashboards, and a Recommendation Tool that suggests missing details — photos, website link, hours, social links — for a new listing.

Said: Microsoft named deeper integration with Bing Maps and Copilot as future investment. That is a stated direction, not a feature you can use today, and it should not be the reason you claim the listing. Claim it because it is free and owned.

Anyone selling you a Bing listing on the promise that it feeds an AI assistant is selling you a roadmap. The honest reason is simpler: it is a public record about your business that you either control or leave for someone else to guess at.

Where it sits in the order of work

After Google, before anything paid. It belongs in the same category as the Apple listing almost nobody claims — free, permanent, and finished once it is done, which is the defining feature of a listing you own rather than rent.

Fifteen minutes, then forget it

Get the Google profile right first. Import, check every field against what is true today, add photos, verify, and put a note in the calendar for the next time your hours or address change. Then leave it alone.

Google is where the calls come from, and that is the profile the plans keep right every month. Bing is a box you tick once and own.

Common questions

What is Bing Places for Business?

Bing Places for Business is Microsoft's free platform for creating and managing a business listing that appears in Bing search results and Bing Maps. It is the Bing equivalent of a Google Business Profile: the business claims it, verifies it, and controls the details, and there is no subscription attached to it.

Where is Bing Places now that bingplaces.com has moved?

It lives at bing.com/forbusiness. Microsoft announced the move on 3 October 2025, migrating the business owner experience into the Bing.com domain, and said existing accounts and their listings would be moved across automatically with users redirected when they sign in with their old credentials.

Can you import your Google Business Profile into Bing Places?

Yes. Bing Places has an import flow that pulls listing details from Google, and Microsoft described it in October 2025 as rebuilt to be faster and more reliable at preserving details like the business name, hours and contact information. Review every imported field afterward, because an import reflects whatever was in the source, including anything out of date.

Is claiming a Bing listing worth the time for a small local business?

It is a one-time task rather than an ongoing one, which is what makes it worth doing. The listing is free, it is owned rather than rented, and it stops being a question once it is claimed and correct. It should be done after the Google profile is right, not instead of it.
