A good Google Business Profile description won’t rank you on its own — it supports relevance and converts readers into calls. That makes it the most overthought field on the profile, and one of the most wasted.
Here’s the truth up front, then examples you can adapt for your own trade.
Does the Google Business Profile description affect ranking?
Directly, barely. Google has said the description isn’t a major ranking factor.
But it earns its place two ways: it reinforces relevance when you use your services and areas naturally, and it converts the people who read it into calls. So write it for a human first, with your keywords worked in honestly.
What should a GBP description include?
In 750 characters or fewer: what you do, who you do it for, the areas you serve, what makes you the safe choice, and a light nudge to act. No keyword stuffing, no fake claims, no links (Google strips them). You add and edit it under Edit profile in your Business Profile dashboard.
Example: pressure washing
Deeper Wash is a family-run pressure washing company serving Waco and the surrounding Central Texas area. We clean driveways, patios, siding, roofs, and commercial storefronts — using soft-wash methods that protect your surfaces. Fully insured, on time, and we send before-and-after photos with every job. Free quotes, and we answer the phone. Serving Waco, Woodway, Hewitt, and Robinson.
Why it works: primary service + real sub-services (relevance), named service areas (relevance), trust signals (insured, photos, “we answer the phone”), and a clear next step.
Example: window cleaning
Crystal View Window Cleaning keeps homes and businesses across Round Rock and North Austin spotless — interior and exterior windows, screens, tracks, and hard-water stain removal. Locally owned, background-checked techs, and a streak-free guarantee. Easy online quotes and flexible scheduling. Proudly serving Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, and Pflugerville.
Example: mobile detailing
Detail on Demand brings full-service auto detailing to your driveway anywhere in the Austin metro. Interior deep cleans, exterior polish, ceramic coating, and headlight restoration — all with our own water and power, so you don’t lift a finger. Five years in the metro, fully insured, and we come to your office lot too. Book online in 60 seconds.
What mistakes waste the description?
Keyword stuffing (“pressure washing Waco pressure washing near me Waco pressure washing…”) reads as spam to humans and does nothing for Google. Vague fluff (“we strive for excellence”) says nothing, and says it in the same words as everyone else in the pack. And never make claims you can’t back — see local SEO scams for why honesty is the long game.
Where does the description fit in the bigger picture?
The description supports your profile; your category, reviews, and completeness do the ranking. Get those right first, then let a clean description convert.
